MACON, Ga. – Ivete Rodrigues is T3 to lead Jacksonville University women's golf as play was halted late in the second round due to darkness at Brickyard Golf Club on Monday.
The Dolphins are seventh on the team leaderboard after dealing with a cold and rainy course on the first day of the Mercer Invitational.
Rodrigues, a freshman from Azores, Portugal, opened the day with an even par 72. She made one birdie and six pars on her first nine holes and added two birdies to go with five pars on the back nine. In her second round, she battled through a start that saw her make bogey on three of her first four holes. From there she settled in, making two straight pars before rattling off three consecutive birdies. She added one additional birdie, along with three pars over her last five holes of the day, and has three holes left in her second round to play tomorrow morning. She was the best on the team on Par-5s, shooting 2-under and Par-4s, shooting even. Her seven birdies were tied for third overall.
Casey Powell weathered an up-and-down first round, bouncing back from a pair of double-bogeys in her first five holes two make two birdies and nine pars the rest of the way, sinking 12 pars total and ending her first round with a red number on her 18th hole of the day. In her shortened second round, she rattled off six straight pars before burying two straight birdies and another par to finish her first nine. She has three holes to play tomorrow morning before starting the third round.
Jenna Fonda put a tough first round behind her to become one of the biggest movers on the leaderboard in the second. After 11 pars and just one birdie in the first round, she started off the second with two birdies in her first nine, and a third to close out her day, to go with eight pars. She also has three holes left in her second round. She led the team in Par-3 scoring, shooting even par.
Susana Olivares was a mark of consistency in the first round, shooting a 1-over 73, making par on her first 13 holes of the day and then following that with a birdie on her 14th. Two more pars prefaced consecutive bogeys to end the round and she carried that into her second round, managing only seven pars the second time through. She did have two birdies, and still has three holes remaining in round two. She was tied for the team-high in pars with Powell, making 22 total.
Ashley Huffman had eight pars and a birdie on the day, and still has six holes left in round two.
JU was fourth in the field in total birdies on the day with 19.
Round two action will conclude tomorrow morning before rolling right into the final round of action.
