Field Hockey Opens ACC Tournament Play Wednesday - University of North Carolina Athletics - UNC Athletics

DURHAM, N.C. – After sitting out Day 1 of the action, top-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina opens play in the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Tournament on Wednesday, taking on fifth-seeded Syracuse in the semifinals. Game time is 1 p.m. at Duke's Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

UNC (15-0, 6-0 ACC) wrapped up the regular season on Saturday on this same blue turf with a 2-0 win over the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels also practiced in Durham on Tuesday morning before the day's quarterfinal games got started. Syracuse, Wake Forest and Virginia all won to advance to Wednesday. UNC received a bye as the tournament's top seed.

Carolina is playing for its 25th ACC title and its sixth in a row.

Notes on the matchup
• UNC and Syracuse are meeting for the 24th time overall and the second time in the past three weeks. North Carolina won the regular-season matchup 6-1 on Oct. 14 in Chapel Hill.
• It marks the second year in a row the Tar Heels and Orange have met in the ACC semifinals. Last season, Carolina won 4-1 in a semifinals matchup in Syracuse.
• UNC leads the overall series with Syracuse 16-7.
• UNC is 4-1 vs. Syracuse in ACC Tournament play. Four of the previous five meetings have also been in the semifinals:

2015: UNC 2-1 in finals
2020: UNC 4-3 OT in semis
2021: UNC 4-1 in semis

• Matson is closing in on UNC's career assists record. She has 61, two shy of tying the all-time mark, which is held by Katelyn Falgowski.
