MLB to play regular season games in Mexico City for first time with Padres-Giants series in 2023 - CBS Sports

padres-giants-getty.png
Getty Images

Major League Baseball announced that there will be a series in Mexico City for the first time -- in the regular season -- next year. The Padres and Giants will do battle for a two-game series in Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium in Mexico's capital and largest city on April 29-30, 2023.

Mexico City is about 7,200 feet above sea level, or much higher than Denver, home to Coors Field. Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú is only 325 feet down both lines and 400 center field, so the conditions should be ripe for the ball to fly out of the yard, especially on any balls hit down the foul lines.

The ballpark opened in 2019 with a game between the home Diablos and the Padres, obviously an exhibition. In 2020, there was a series scheduled between the Diamondbacks and Padres, but the COVID-19 pandemic ruined those plans.

MLB has played regular-season games in Mexico before, but they were all in Estadio de Béisbol in Monterrey. Here's a look at those games:

"The Padres are excited to return to Mexico and play in the first regular season series in Mexico City in MLB history," Padres CEO Erik Greupner said in a statement.  "We are fortunate to have a loyal and passionate fan base in Mexico, and it will be an honor to showcase our team in Mexico's capital city at the beautiful new ballpark built by and named after Padres minority owner Alfredo Harp Helú."

"It will be an honor to represent Major League Baseball, as well as San Francisco, at historic Mexico City for the first time ever," added Giants president Larry Baer. "We look forward to bringing the Giants and Padres rivalry to a passionate sports fan base and it will be a great opportunity to introduce the Giants to an international audience to further develop new fans across all of Mexico."

IM Sports: What's available, how to play - The State News

Intramural sports, a college pastime like no other.

Want to have fun with friends? You can do that. Want to relive the glory days in basketball? You can do that. Just need to blow some steam? You can do that too!

This year at Michigan State, things are back in full swing at IM West, IM East and IM Circle for IM Sports after being off in 2020-21 and with restrictions in 2021-22 with masks and other precautions.

“We're going full bore,” Assistant Director of Recreational Sports and Fitness Services Ross Winter said. “Last year, we played all of our outdoor activities in the fall, full bore. We started with masks in the spring semester, but that got removed later on. We dealt with that as it went on. We don't anticipate any hang-ups this semester or this year either.”

The cost of participation is relatively low at $10 a person and $25 to enter as a team, in addition to the $10 individual cost.

Here’s a rundown of everything IM Sports at MSU will be offering this fall for students.

Pickleball

Season length: Sept. 19 - Oct. 6

If you enjoy tennis or ping pong, this sport is for you.

Playing on a gym floor with a ground-level net, players rally back and forth hitting the ball over the net in a tennis or ping pong style match with plastic paddles. Teams have to be a minimum of two, but upwards of four to switch in and out, if needed.

Tennis

Season length: Sept. 1 - Oct. 31

A singles league, tennis is a great way to meet people and play on indoor or outdoor tennis courts around MSU’s campus.

Indoor Volleyball

Season length: Oct. 9- Nov. 3

Male, female and co-ed leagues are available for indoor volleyball if you’re looking to avoid the weather in the Michigan fall. A 6v6 match, but teams can roster 15 people to rotate on the court.

Sand Volleyball

Season length: Sept. 19 - Oct. 6 or 20

This one may be a little cold at times considering you’re not on the beaches in California, but the sand nets in East Lansing will have to do.

There are four sand volleyball leagues to participate in from men’s, women’s, co-ed and open. Teams must consist of at least four players and upwards of eight players with the exception of 12 in co-ed.

Support student media! Please consider donating to The State News and help fund the future of journalism.

Cornhole

Season length: Sept. 21 - Oct. 12

A tailgating classic, teams are made up of two with a maximum of four to rotate around. The $25 cost as a team, however, is not added to the cost.

Spikeball

Season length: Sept. 21 - Oct. 5

My personal favorite game Spikeball is quickly becoming a classic game at tailgates and parties. Think volleyball, but with a net on the ground between four players on teams of two. The cost is only $10 a person.

5v5 Basketball

Season length: Sept. 27 - Oct. 20

Here’s your opportunity to feel like LeBron James in 5v5 basketball. The first 5v5 league, named ELITE, is meant for the best of the best in IM Basketball. If you’re looking for a more casual experience, 3v3 may be more your speed or wait for the more casual 5v5 in the Spring semester.

However, the Turkey Shootout on Nov. 13 is a winner take all tournament open to everyone. With a minimum of five players to play and upwards of 12 on a team, each squad will play at a minimum of two games before being eliminated.

3v3 Basketball

Season length: Oct. 17 - Nov. 3

Open and women’s 3v3 leagues will operate this fall with a team minimum of you guessed it, three, and a maximum of 12. Games are played on a halfcourt instead of full court.

9v9 Soccer

Season length: Sept. 25 - Oct. 20

Embrace your inner Christian Pulisic and play some soccer! Personally, I’ve never seen more competitive and intense matches in IM than I have seen in 9v9 soccer. I highly recommend it.

9v9 soccer has four leagues including men’s, women’s co-ed and a graduate and faculty league. If you have a lot of friends, good, you can have as many people rostered as you please with a minimum of nine players.

Dodgeball

Season length: Sept. 25 - Oct. 6 or 20

This one isn’t for the faint of heart.

Dodgeball has two leagues of co-ed and open and requires a minimum of six players and a maximum of 15.

Flag football

Season length: Sept. 25 - Oct. 20

In addition to a co-ed, men’s and graduate and faculty league, you can also arrange free scrimmages through IM if you have enough people.

Teams are made up by seven players and eight in co-ed (four males, four females).

Ultimate Frisbee

Season length: Sept. 25 - Oct. 20

Another one of my personal favorites combines frisbee with touch football. Requires seven players to play with an unlimited amount able to be rostered with a men’s and co-ed league.

Broomball

Season length: Oct. 2 - Oct. 16

Hockey, but with an orange ball. A minimum of six players are required for this sport which only lasts two weeks!

Regardless of what you do, IM Sports is an easy way to get active and meet friends right away.

“Find a group of friends that you'd like to play with and get involved as often as you possibly can,” Winter said. “I think a lot of the freshmen that come in, they get so overwhelmed that they don't really think that they can play. They're so worried about school and are worried about, ‘Who am I going to play with?’ They need to meet friends in the dorms, meet friends from across campus, from their classes, and just say, ‘Hey, what do you like to do?’”

Registration and more information can be found here.

Laura Linney to Return to Broadway in New David Auburn Play - The New York Times

“Summer, 1976,” about a friendship between two women in Ohio, will open next spring at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater.

Laura Linney will return to Broadway next spring, in a new play by David Auburn about a friendship that arises between two women during America’s bicentennial.

The play, called “Summer, 1976,” will be presented at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater by the Manhattan Theater Club, or M.T.C., which is one of four nonprofit organizations with Broadway houses. M.T.C. had previously announced plans to stage the play this fall, Off Broadway, but on Tuesday announced that Linney had agreed to lead the cast and that the production would now be delayed to spring and moved to Broadway.

Linney, 58, is well known for her work on film (“The Savages”) and television (“Ozark”); she has won four Emmy Awards and has been nominated for three Academy Awards.

She has returned often to the stage, performing in 12 previous Broadway productions, and has been nominated five times for Tony Awards. Her most recent Broadway role was in early 2020, just before the pandemic closed theaters, when she starred in the solo play “My Name Is Lucy Barton,” which was also produced by M.T.C.

Auburn, the playwright, is best known as the author of “Proof,” which won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in drama, as well as the Tony Award for best play. That play was also produced on Broadway by M.T.C.

“Summer, 1976” will be directed by Daniel Sullivan, who won a Tony for directing “Proof,” and who also directed Auburn’s 2012 Broadway play, “The Columnist.” Sullivan has directed Broadway productions featuring Linney three times previously, including most recently a 2017 revival of “The Little Foxes.”

M.T.C. said that previews for “Summer, 1976” would begin April 4; it did not announce an opening date or other members of the cast. The organization described the new play as about an unexpected friendship between two Ohio women, “a fiercely iconoclastic artist and single mom” played by Linney, and “a free-spirited yet naïve young housewife.” The characters “navigate motherhood, ambition and intimacy, and help each other discover their own independence.”

Shane McClanahan injury: Rays ace scratched from start vs. Marlins with shoulder impingement - CBS Sports

gettyimages-14146763021.jpg
Getty Images

The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the hottest teams in baseball the last few weeks, but were delivered bad news Tuesday night. All-Star lefty and Cy Young candidate Shane McClanahan did not start as scheduled against Miami Marlins (GameTracker), and the team says he has a left shoulder impingement. He will undergo further testing Wednesday.

McClanahan did attempt to warm up prior to the game. The Bally Sports television broadcast showed him flexing his arm, and being consoled by coaches and teammates after deciding to pull the plug.

The Rays have had a difficult time keeping pitchers healthy in recent years. They currently have seven pitchers on the injured list, including starters Yonny Chirinos (Tommy John surgery), Tyler Glasnow (Tommy John surgery), and Shane Baz (elbow sprain). Elbows are generally fixable. Shoulders can be much more troublesome.

Tampa has operated with four starting pitchers in recent weeks -- McClanahan, Corey Kluber, Drew Rasmussen, and Jeffrey Springs -- while using a variety of openers and spot starters in the fifth spot. Righty Luis Patiño and lefties Josh Fleming and Ryan Yarbrough are the top candidates to move into the rotation should McClanahan miss time.

McClanahan, 25, came into Tuesday with a 2.20 ERA and 182 strikeouts in a career high 147 1/3 innings this season. His previous career high was the 129 innings he threw last year between the regular season and postseason. McClanahan had Tommy John surgery in college but has otherwise been healthy as a pro.

The Rays have won 12 of their last 16 games to improve to 70-56 on the season. They are seven games behind the fading New York Yankees in the AL East. The two clubs open a three-game series at Tropicana Field on Friday.

A Running Start - Utah Athletics

Now, fully stocked with 18 scholarships, Utah cross country has regained national prominence under head coach Kyle Kepler. The Utes have qualified for the NCAA championships in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2021, finishing as high as 16th in 2019. Utah also finished second at the 2021 Pac-12 Conference Championships.

“It’s a program that’s been up and it’s been down. We’re back again and I think that’s like a lot of collegiate programs,” said Kepler. “I think every program goes through that at some point. We’re just happy to be where we are and thankful that (the 1981 team) was able to set it in motion.”

Kepler noted that the program was really, really good at that point.

“To have that kind of success early on, I think, says a lot about the direction that the program had.” Kepler said.

Jones was one of the first people to call Kepler when he was hired nearly two decades ago. He offered his support to help get the program performing at a higher level once again.

The national championship, Kepler acknowledged, was so long ago that sometimes we all forget. Therefore, this story has all the makings of a forgotten championship, of sorts. That, however, hasn’t diminished its significance.

“I was always proud of how well the team did,” Woodworth said. “I felt so blessed to be part of that team.”

Woodworth, who is being inducted into the Utah Athletics Hall of Fame this year, shared that it was a huge part of her life.

“We just did what we had to do to improve and run as well as we could,” she said. “Everything just came together. It was pretty amazing.”

How To Start A Business In Missouri (2022 Guide) - Forbes

Missouri is considered a great state to start a new business. The corporate tax rate is only 4%, making it one of the most tax-friendly states in the country. If you are thinking about how to start a business in Missouri, you’ll want to make sure you comply with state and local laws. This means properly filing paperwork and getting the correct tax licenses and permits.

We have created this guide to help you get organized to start and run your Missouri business.

Find Legal Answers For Your Small Business

Nolo offers hundreds of consumer-friendly do-it-yourself legal products written in plain English.

Before You Start

You may have an idea for a new business in Missouri. That’s great, but don’t just assume an idea is enough. Before you start completing paperwork and spending money, do some research and write a business plan that explains what you sell, who your target market is and how you will market your products or services.

A well-written business plan serves as a blueprint for your business operations once you start and helps keep you organized. The business plan should also include a budget with projected revenues to help guide you on what it will take to be profitable.

Choose Your Business Entity

Choosing the correct entity can make a big difference in protecting your personal assets from business liabilities. There are several types of entities that you can establish:

While a sole proprietorship and partnership are easy to establish, they don’t offer you any personal protection from liabilities. This could create a problem if you are sued or have an uninsured claim.

LPs, LLPs, LLLPs, LLCs and corporations do offer liability protection (be sure to understand the difference in liability for various partners in partnerships).

Corporations generally keep assets and revenues separate from personal assets, while LLCs can be taxed as corporations or pass profits onto partners to report on their personal tax returns.

Another benefit of creating an LLC in Missouri is that, unlike most other states, there is no annual report or fee necessary.

Start Now

Register Your Company

After you have settled upon which entity you want to establish, you’ll need to register it with the state to become an official business, unless it’s a sole proprietorship or regular partnership. Business entity formation papers are filed with the Secretary of State.

Sole proprietorships and partnerships should file a fictitious business name (also known as doing business as or DBA) through the Missouri Online Business Filing portal if they are using any name other than their own legal names. This must be renewed every five years. There is a $7 fee for the filing.

LPs, LLPs, LLLPs, LLCs and corporations will also file forms via the online portal. LPs file a certificate of limited partnership, LLPs file the application for registration of a limited liability partnership and LLLPs file the application for registration of a limited liability limited partnership. (Partnership fees depend on the number of partners.)

An LLC will file articles of organization through the portal and pay the $50 filing fee. Corporations file articles of incorporation that also have a $50 filing fee for the first $30,000 of authorized shares. It is an additional $5 for each additional $10,000 of authorized shares.

Set Up Your Finances

Setting up your finances for the new business doesn’t need to be complicated. The first thing that you’ll want to do for most business entities is to obtain an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS website. This is a free tax ID number that your business will use for tax reporting at the state and federal level.

Use this number when you go to the bank to establish your business checking account. It will also be used when you establish an unemployment insurance account with the state and when you file tax returns for the business.

Acquire Funding

Not every new business requires outside funding to get started. You may choose to use personal savings to start the venture. However, if you do require outside financing, you’ll want to use your business plan to help secure it. Banks and investors will use the plan to evaluate your potential for profit and success.

Choose Your Location

When starting a new business, you’ll want to consider where it will be located. For some small business owners, operating out of their homes is ideal as it saves costs, and they can travel to customers as needed. For others, having a retail or office location helps create a professional image that will help drive more customers to your business.

You’ll be given a commercial lease to review and sign when renting a location. You’ll want to review this with a professional commercial real estate agent or an attorney to make sure that you understand all the terms and conditions of your lease.

Get Licenses and Permits

While Missouri doesn’t require every business to obtain a business license, it does require every business that sells tangible goods or taxable services to obtain a sales tax license. You must get this license before you begin business operations. This form is available via their online portal, or you may complete Form 2643 and mail it to:

Missouri Department of Revenue
Taxation Division
P.O. Box 357
Jefferson City, MO 65105-0357

Additionally, each county or municipality has different requirements for permits and licenses, so it is a good idea to check with your local government.

Get Insurance

Insurance is an essential aspect of any business risk mitigation strategy. You can’t prevent all claims from happening, so paying a small premium for protection is wise. Some policies, such as a general liability policy, may be required by your landlord when signing a lease.

A workers’ compensation policy may be required if you have five or more employees (unless you are in the construction industry). It is wise to speak with a commercial insurance agent who can help you identify the biggest risks to your company and how you can protect yourself within your budget.

Bottom Line

Starting a business in Missouri can be fun and profitable. Remember that registering your business entity and obtaining your EIN are paramount to be able to start most business types. Refer to your business plan as you get started so you can stay on track, run the business as you intend to and become profitable.

Switzerland's engineering sector urges country to start energy saving now - Reuters

ZURICH, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Switzerland's mechanical and electrical engineering sector said on Tuesday that businesses and households need to start energy savings immediately and called for more government support to help companies weather surging power costs.

Last week Switzerland set a voluntary gas savings target of 15% for the winter as Europe faces a potential gas shortage as a consequence of the Ukraine war. On Wednesday, the government is expected to announce new contingency plans for addressing possible future electricity shortages due to Switzerland's dependence on gas imports this winter.

SwissMEM, which represents mechanical and electrical engineering companies, said carbon reduction targets should be waived for companies that switch to heating oil from gas, and the government should provide incentives for owners of reserve power stations and streamline regulatory approvals for industries that switch production to nights or Sundays.

It proposed that energy savings start immediately, and homes, offices, production plants, museums and shopping centres should not be heated to more than 19°C (66.2°F) this winter.

New orders in the mechanical and engineering sector rose by 10.1% in the first half of 2022, sales swelled by 12.1% and exports increased by 9% year on year, SwissMEM said in a statement.

However, supply chain problems and soaring energy and commodity prices pushed up production costs just as the euro undergoes rapid nominal depreciation versus the Swiss franc.

"All these factors are putting pressure on firms' margins. On top of all this there is the looming threat of energy shortages this winter. These must be prevented at all costs," the association said.

Not all MEM members are in a position to use flexible planning to cope with power cuts that would halt output at companies that need high temperatures for products, it said.

Industrial companies that rely on uninterrupted power supplies must be exempted from any gas and electricity rationing that the government has said it could impose under a worst-case scenario. read more

The association also called on the government to review its longer-term energy strategy, saying: "It is clear from the current situation that we cannot abandon both nuclear and fossil fuels at the same time."

How To Start A Business In Michigan (2022 Guide) - Forbes

Between January 2020 and January 2022, Michigan saw a 24% small business revenue increase compared to 6.9% for the rest of the country. This demonstrates that Michigan has worked hard to be a small business-friendly state and that it is a good time to launch your business. There are a lot of steps involved in starting your business. While you don’t always need to do them in order, you do want to complete each step to make sure your business is properly registered and set up. This guide will help you find out how to start a business in Michigan.

Find Legal Answers For Your Small Business

Nolo offers hundreds of consumer-friendly do-it-yourself legal products written in plain English.

Before You Start

Before you go through the steps of establishing a business, you should take the time to flesh out your idea for your company. Think about what you will do, who you will serve and how the company will work. It’s a good idea to write a business plan to have a blueprint of what you want to do and how you will do it.

The business plan will cover what the business does, how it is marketed and what the expected finances will look like for the first couple of years of business. The more detailed the plan can be, the better it is for your overall strategic planning. Once you have a business plan, you’ll refer to it regularly to make sure that you are putting energy into activities that drive the business forward and generate more revenue.

Choose Your Entity

Don’t register your company until you have chosen an entity or business structure. The most common entities are:

You may want to consult a tax advisor and business lawyer to make sure that you choose the entity that provides you with the best tax advantages and liability protection for your business.

Start A Limited Liability Company Online Today with ZenBusiness

Click on the state below to get started.

Start Now

Register Your Company

Registering your company means registering the business entity with the Corporations Division. While sole proprietorships and partnerships don’t need to file organizational documents, you may be required to file a doing business as (DBA) with the counties in which you do business.

For LLCs, LPs, LLPs and corporations, you’ll need to file articles of organization, certificate of partnership, application to register an LLP or articles of incorporation with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), respectively. It costs $10 to $100 to file these forms and register.

Mail documents to:

Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
Corporations Division
P.O. Box 30054
Lansing, Michigan 48909

Or submit in person at:

Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
LARA
2407 N. Grand River Ave.
Lansing, MI 48906

Set Up Your Finances

Setting up your finances starts with getting a federal employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS. You can do this online for free by going to the IRS website. You will use this number to establish bank accounts, unemployment accounts and tax accounts with the state and federal governments. You want to keep your personal finances separate from your business finances to prevent commingling, which reduces your liability protection from the business structure.

Acquire Funding

Consider how the business will be funded. Your business plan should outline how much capital is needed to start and run the business until it is profitable. There are three ways to finance a new business: bootstrap it with your own money, get a small business loan or find one or more investors.

You can use the business plan when you talk to small business lenders at a local bank or Small Business Administration (SBA) office. The business plan is also useful when speaking with investors about your business idea.

You need to make sure that you have enough capital to ride out the initial months or years of business when you are developing your brand and starting to make money. You might not be profitable immediately, so funding helps fuel the business while growing.

Choose Your Location

If you haven’t already done so, this is the time to secure a location for your business. If you are leasing a location, make sure that you understand the terms and conditions of the lease agreement. Some lease agreements may require you to take care of all building maintenance, including HVAC systems. This could be a big cost if something goes wrong.

If you have questions, have a business or real estate attorney read through and advise you on the agreement.

Get Licenses and Permits

Keep in mind that you may need specific permits or licenses to run certain companies in certain locations. For example, if you have a marijuana dispensary, you will be required to obtain a Medical Marijuana Facilities License for a retailer, which has a $3,000 application fee, a $15,000 licensure fee and an annual $15,000 fee.

If your business sells any type of product or offers certain services, you may be required to get a sales tax license from the Michigan Treasury Department. It’s free to get and will allow you to resell goods to consumers and collect the applicable sales tax.

Obtain Insurance

Depending on your business type, you may be required to obtain one or more business insurance policies. In Michigan, if you have three or more employees at any time, or one employee working at least 35 hours per week for 13 weeks or longer in the past 52 weeks, you will be required to obtain workers’ compensation insurance.

If you rent or lease a space, you likely want commercial renter’s insurance. You should also consider general business liability insurance. Other state and federal licensing might require you to have certain insurance policies.

Consult with a commercial insurance agent to fully understand insurance requirements. It’s important to note that even if you aren’t required to get insurance, it is a wise idea to get the protection it offers for what can be devastating financial losses.

Bottom Line

Starting a business in Michigan is exciting but requires establishing the right entity, getting your financials in order and securing the perfect location. Forming a business entity doesn’t cost a lot, making it easy to start your business. All of these details should be outlined in your business plan, which is an internal document that you refer back to regularly and use to help secure funding for your business.

Auburn, Wake Forest play to scoreless tie - Auburn Tigers Official Athletic Site

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Auburn soccer (2-0-2) wrapped its two-game road stint with another tie at Wake Forest (3-0-1) Sunday at Spry Stadium. Both teams traded blows, but neither found the back of the net, finishing at 0-0.

"Lots to learn from these games for sure, but they were two very challenging matches on the road," Tigers head coach Karen Hoppa said. "Today, I thought we grew into the game, again, but we've got to work on starting stronger and starting more aggressive from an offensive standpoint. Credit to our defense, they have looked great to start the year and have really kept us in ballgames."

The Demon Deacons outshot the Tigers 12-6, but Auburn still managed to place the majority of its opportunities on goal with four shots coming on target. Junior Anna Haddock and sophomore Sydnie Thibodaux led the Orange & Blue offense with two shots apiece.

Auburn's most dangerous chance came in the 41st minute as the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick following a Wake Forest foul. Haddock took the PK, aiming for the low right corner of the net, but the Demon Deacon keeper made the save to uphold the stalemate.

Junior goalkeeper Maddie Prohaska continued her dominant outing in the net, collecting five saves to lead the Tigers' outstanding defensive effort. Through 360 minutes of action this season, Prohaska has yet to allow a goal in the run of play, with the only one allowed coming via penalty kick.

Also holding down the back line were Hailey Whitaker, Madeline Moore, LJ Knox, M.E. Craven, Hayden Colson and Erin Houston. The sixsome only allowed the Demon Deacons to place five total shots on-goal. Craven went the distance at centerback for the third time this year.

The Tigers return to the friendly confines of the Auburn Soccer Complex with another top-25 matchup against No. 21 West Virginia Thursday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT.

A Triple-Bogey Start Vanquished, Rory McIlroy Captures the FedEx Cup - The New York Times

McIlroy edged out Scottie Scheffler, who had held the lead in Atlanta for almost the entire Tour Championship. Sungjae Im and Scheffler finished tied for second, a stroke behind.

ATLANTA — On Thursday, his scorecard a shambles after only two holes at the Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy did not find himself thinking about golf’s comeback magicians or his fellow major champions.

Instead, he considered the example of a 20-year-old player, Joohyung Kim, also known as Tom Kim, who won the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., this month.

“He started with a quad and ended up going on to win the golf tournament,” McIlroy, who had opened his Tour Championship with a triple-bogey and a bogey, said then. “It is possible.”

So McIlroy proved it himself. Three days after he produced an instant debacle at East Lake Golf Club and six weeks after he faltered at the British Open, McIlroy orchestrated the largest final-round comeback in the history of the Tour Championship and defeated Scottie Scheffler by a stroke on Sunday. Although McIlroy’s win did not end his eight-year drought in major tournaments, he earned $18 million, claimed his third FedEx Cup, a record, and allowed the PGA Tour to close a turbulent season by crowning a beloved stalwart as its champion.

“I just felt so close all year,” McIlroy said after his victory in Atlanta, where Scheffler started with the tournament lead Thursday and held it until Sunday evening. “I had a couple wins, but I was just waiting for something. Maybe this was it. I got a little lucky with Scottie not playing his best golf today, and I took advantage of that with my good play.”

But, McIlroy added, “I went up against the best player in the world today and I took him down, and that’s got to mean something.”

Even though McIlroy trailed Scheffler by six strokes at the beginning of the fourth round, the final two holes of his third round — played on Sunday morning because of Saturday’s weather in Atlanta — suggested he was in fighting form: He birdied both.

McIlroy started the final round with a bogey, but he made birdie on No. 3 to bring his score even. Starting with the fifth hole, he stitched together three consecutive birdies that would undergird a 32 on the front nine. Scheffler, McIlroy’s partner in the final pairing, had three bogeys in the first half of the fourth round, which he finished with a three-over-par 73.

For as sure-footed as McIlroy so often seemed Sunday, and for as wobbly as Scheffler sometimes was, McIlroy did not assume sole command of the leaderboard until the final putts at No. 16.

He might as well have on No. 15, though.

Thirty-one feet from the pin, McIlroy tapped the ball and then stood like a statue, his putter barely aloft as the ball broke to the left. Then it swung toward the hole, McIlroy stepping back — and willing, praying, something — a few steps before it rolled into the cup. McIlroy raised his right fist in jubilation as the crowd thundered its approval.

Scheffler made a bogey on the next hole and, at last, surrendered the solo lead.

“I really fought hard today; Rory just played a really good round of golf,” Scheffler said. “He made some key putts there at the end, and he definitely deserved to win.”

Scheffler finished in a tie for second with Sungjae Im. Xander Schauffele was two strokes behind them, and Max Homa and Justin Thomas finished tied for fifth, trailing McIlroy by four strokes.

In McIlroy, 33, the PGA Tour got a FedEx Cup winner who has been one of its fiercest loyalists during the year’s upheaval over LIV Golf, the new series that has lured top players with hundreds of millions of dollars from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.

The dramatics over LIV were hardly absent from Atlanta — McIlroy was paired Thursday and Friday with Cameron Smith, the British Open winner who has not publicly denied a British news media report that he intends to defect as soon as this week. But McIlroy’s win was a boon for an entrenched order that has lately been besieged.

“Everyone on tour has had to deal with a lot; even the guys that have went to LIV have had to deal with a lot,” McIlroy said before adding, a few moments later: “This is the best place in the world to play golf. It’s the most competitive. It’s got the best players. It’s got the deepest fields. I don’t know why you’d want to play anywhere else.”

He could have been forgiven, of course, for thinking otherwise Thursday in the rain in Atlanta. But Sunday, he said his mind had “automatically” wandered to Kim’s resurrection in Greensboro.

“I could have easily thought the other way and thought: ‘I’ve got no chance now. What am I doing here?’” McIlroy said Sunday, when he shot a 66. “But I just sort of, I guess, proved that I was in a really good mind-set for the week, and I didn’t let it get to me too much and just stuck my head down and got to work.”

By a lone stroke, it was enough.

Shopping for Solar Panels? Here's Where to Start - CNET

Buying solar panels to power your home can be an all-around good money decision. It can increase your home's resale value, deliver a large tax credit and save you money on energy for decades. Solar panels can produce energy for a long time (many warranties are for 25 years), so they should produce energy well after you pay them off. Even with these potential benefits, the initial cost can be intimidating. And, with new technologies (like GAF's Energy's Timberline Solar shingle), it can be difficult to know where to shop.

Buying residential solar panels should not be one-stop shopping. It's always a good idea to get quotes from multiple installers. And, you should go in with a solid understanding of your energy needs, your national and local tax incentives and your options for buying or financing in some other way. There are more tips in our solar panel buying guide.

When you're ready to shop, you have plenty of options, explained below. It's important to note that we haven't tested panels or gone through the purchasing process through any of these outlets. This guide will help you know where to look, not which solar array is best for your needs.

Hardware retailers

Your big-box retailers such as The Home Depot sell solar panels, mounting hardware, inverters and charge controllers. Home Depot makes buying solar panels simple through its website or your local store. If you want professional installation, it'll pair you with licensed, insured installation professionals. In the case of Lowe's, it'll offer a one to two-year guarantee on labor. Stores may also offer financing options, like a credit card to help you break up the upfront expenses.

And if you are a do-it-yourselfer, these stores sell everything you need to install the system, saving you money relative to professional installation options.

Specialty options

Another route is to choose a solar company like Sunrun, which works with Costco. To start, Sunrun offers a free consultation to help you learn more about their services and equipment.

At that time, a representative visits your home, learns more about your needs, then inspects and measures your home's roof. In the end, Sunrun will finalize the project details like how many solar panels you need and the costs.

Sunrun even offers financing, a 10-year warranty, and 2% cashback if you have a Costco Executive Membership. However, one thing to consider with these options is they aren't available in all states. So you'll need to contact the company to determine your eligibility.

One more option on this front is SunPower. Its website is unique in that it allows you to design your solar panel system online. And when you're ready to buy, the company will hire local, qualified contractors to complete the work. It also offers flexible payment options, including 0% down to make the system more budget flexible.

Online solar companies

You could also select an online solar provider like Tesla. These providers design their no-grid panels with a low profile to achieve a minimalist look. Tesla stands behind its products with a 25-year warranty.

These companies also make the process convenient. Once you request a consultation, Tesla takes aerial pictures of your home to determine the project design and costs. It takes care of permitting, allowing you to relax during installation. Further, your purchase comes with mobile monitoring, giving you access to system performance and production.

You could also go with Zenernet Solar. It makes the whole process remote, from custom-designing your solar system to hiring reputable contractors to complete the project. You can schedule a free consultation with Zenernet

Local choices

Partnering with local companies can be the best of both worlds. You can shop online for solar panels, inverters and more. Or, you visit a local dealer to ask questions, design your system and solve grievances. Companies like Sunpro Solar and Palmetto take care of everything in-house. That way, you have a resource available that walks you through each step, keeping you informed and comfortable along the way.

Sunpro Solar also offers roofing services to accommodate the long life of solar panels. And Palmetto provides customers with an app, allowing you to monitor efficiency.

Other buying considerations

When considering solar options, research the companies you're considering. Examine their warranty offerings, prices, installation costs and timeframes, customer reviews, panel recycling methods and reputations through third-party resources such as the Better Business Bureau. Also, check to see if a company will assist you with permitting (if applicable). Doing the homework helps you find a reputable provider.

Moreover, consider all the financial aspects of the project. Do not forget to include costs for permits, installation and roof upgrades or replacement. Alternatively, make sure to take advantage of tax incentives like the Investment Tax Credit, which reduce your federal tax liability by 26% of the total costs of the solar panel system. States also have programs where you could receive even more perks, lowering your initial investment.

Michigan to Start Different Quarterbacks in First Two Games - Sports Illustrated

Michigan fans eagerly awaiting word on who will start under center entering next week’s season opener finally received an update from coach Jim Harbaugh on Saturday.

However, those looking for a definitive answer may have to wait a little bit longer, based on the Wolverines’ current plan for senior Cade McNamara and sophomore J.J. McCarthy.

Harbaugh announced Michigan’s plan to alternate its starting quarterback for the first two weeks of the season, beginning with McNamara, last season’s starter, on Sept. 3 against Colorado State followed by McCarthy stepping in versus Hawaii on Sept. 10. Harbaugh noted the program will then make a final decision on its starter and backup going into Week 3 against UConn, the third of the Wolverines’ five home games to start the year.

While onlookers may categorize the approach as unorthodox, Harbaugh has consistently said throughout camp both players had a legitimate shot to win the job. On Saturday, he again echoed those same sentiments, saying the team is “very confident” either McNamara or McCarthy could lead Michigan to a national title.

“Both quarterbacks have played great—done everything they could have and, in every way, to win the starting job,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “Coming out of camp, I just feel like we have two quarterbacks, Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy, that we feel very confident that we can win a championship with either of those two behind center.”

Tabbed as the incumbent entering camp, McNamara’s camp-long battle to retain QB1 duties will now carry over into the season; in his 14 starts in 2021, the third-team All-Big Ten selection completed 64.2% of his passes (210-for-327) for 2,576 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. Meanwhile, McCarthy showed promise in limited action as a freshman reserve, recording a 57.6 completion rate (34-for-59) with 516 yards, five TDs and two INTs in 11 appearances.

Regardless of whom ends up being named QB1, Michigan will have lofty goals entering Harbaugh’s eighth season at the helm as the program looks to win its first national title since 1997. The Wolverines finished the ’21 campaign with a 12–2 record (8–1 Big Ten) and earned the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff after defeating Iowa for the Big Ten Championship. The team’s season eventually ended in a 34–11 semifinal loss to future CFP champion Georgia.

New Barcelona B boss Rafa Marquez makes winning start - ESPN

Chadi Riad headed in a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Mexican great Rafa Marquez began life as Barcelona Atletic coach with a thrilling 3-2 win against Castellon on Saturday.

Barca opened the scoring in the first game of the Spanish third division season through Estanis Pedrola, but they then had to come from behind to secure the three points on Marquez's debut.

Goals just before half-time from Daniel Romera and Josep Calvera handed Castellon the advantage going into the break.

Marquez's side rallied in the second half and eventually equalised through Ilias Akhomach in the 66th minute before Riad scored the winner in the sixth minute of added on time.

Following a successful seven-year spell at Camp Nou as a player, during which time he won four LaLiga titles and two Champions Leagues, former Mexico international Marquez returned to the club as coach of the reserve team earlier this summer.

He replaced Sergi Barjuan with the dual task of continuing to develop players for the first team while aiming for promotion into the second tier of Spanish football.

Under Barjuan, Barca missed out on the playoffs last season, which led to the decision to replace him with Marquez, who previously coached in Spain during a fleeting period with Alcala de Madrid's U16 side.

Barca got off to the perfect start under Marquez at the Johan Cruyff Stadium on Saturday when winger Pedrola drove in from the left before producing a stunning finish in the 12th minute.

However, they found themselves behind at the break after quick-fire goals from Romera and Calvera.

Akhomach, a talented 18-year-old forward who made three first-team appearances last season, levelled things up with 25 minutes to go with a brilliant strike from distance.

Barca pushed for the win late on, but a draw looked more likely until centre-back Riad rose highest to head in from a corner with what was effectively the last action of the game.
